artwork: Malva neglecta by Phoenix Lacey
Malva neglecta by Phoenix Lacey
As an herbalist and animist who focuses on plant spirit medicine, I often channel the spirit of plants into various complex art forms to give them a translatable, visual voice which can bring humans into a deeper relation and understanding of their medicine + psyches. This understanding comes from sitting and communing with the plants directly, consuming them, my herbalist education, and researching into a plant's folklore as they're represented in many cultural contexts. This piece in particular is based off of Pliny the Elder's folk tale that Malva neglecta seeds are to be used in sex magick by sprinkling them onto the erotic zones of our bodies with a lover. This species is also utilized as a love medicine by the Iroquois peoples. Most don't think twice about this "noxious weed," so I desired to illustrate it in a more sensual light in the hopes to remind us of the reverence we once had for them that inspired poetry and erotica.

Donica Larade is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist from Nova Scotia with a background in biology whose art explores traditional scientific illustrations in a modern context. They are passionate about science communication, sustainable foraging and wildlife conservation, and these themes are echoed in their work. Hiking their way across the province and scouring the shorelines for treasures, they are often inspired by their surroundings and take the time to identify the samples they collect before transforming them into illustrations. As seen through their lichen, bat or bug pieces, they have an affinity for the underdogs of the natural world and use their art to emphasize the beauty of common or misunderstood species. Donica predominantly uses pen, watercolour, gouache, coloured pencil and acrylic to create these pieces. Most recently they’ve picked up textiles and cyanotype printing to further interpret scientific illustrations through quilting.

I'm an expressionist abstract painter from Indonesia. I express my feelings, thoughts and ideas to paintings. I also channel the rhythm of the universe to my works of art. Other than that, I also host expressive art workshop to heal people's inner child and help people deal with their feelings better.
